I picked up a portable recumbent bike yesterday, so I figured I'd watch the final presidential debate and get in a workout. It seemed the debate turned into a stump speech to a single person, Joe the Plumber. Apparently, this guy is wanting to buy out the business he works for, but makes profits over $250,000 and is concerned that he will have to pay 3% more in taxes under Obama. Well boo-hoo, Joe. Assuming this company brings in exactly $250,000(which possibly could be much more), what would the selling price of such a company would be in the neighborhood of $1 or $2 million. I'm sorry, if he can afford this price, Joe's not hurting. I'm sick of the rich whining about having to pay taxes, while people in my neighborhood are struggling to afford to keep their cars running so they can go to work. McCain used this as a springboard to attack Obama's tax plan(which lowers taxes for anybody making less that $250,000 by much more than McCain's)
Beyond that, the debate was pretty much what I expected. McCain was in attack mode, while Obama stayed calm and played it pretty close to the vest. McCain's attacks have actually backfired on him in the polls, so I thought he would try to tone it down, but apparently he's out of options. All of the post-debate polling showed Obama ahead on trust and likability, so I have to think the advantage goes to Obama. Obama was polling ahead before the debate, and I expect that will continue, if not widen. Time to stick a fork in McCain, he's done.
