Rep. Ted Thomsen of Ada has filed a resolution to try to prevent Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary bioligist, from speaking at the University of Oklahoma. Whether you believe in evolution or not, I disagree with any attempts to stifle free speech. This truly is a backwards state.

It's About Literacy Y'all - Who Needs Grammar?
I noticed these posters at my daughter's school and just had to shake my head. They are from a campaign to promote literacy program awareness in Oklahoma, called Read Y'all, which is sponsored by our library system. The first one I saw featured our governor, Brad Henry, and his wife. Apparently, they are using anybody with any hint of being a celebrity in the state, such as James Garner, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood and Garrett Mills. I'm all for promoting literacy, but shouldn't we promote literacy without resorting to butchering grammar?

Why Darwin Was Wrong
The U.S.A. has defeated Darwin. The stupid shall inherit the Earth because they're the ones having all the babies and while the intelligent people are waiting for the economy to recover. However, the economy is not getting any favors from said stupid people having babies and using government welfare.
Oh yeah, Nadya Suleman, the octuplet mom is not only on food stamps and disability, is about to lose the house to foreclosure. It's not really their house; they live with grandma. A local TV station tried to call them, but the phone was disconnected. Sure, she can take care of the kids on her own. Yeah. Sure.

Update On Arizona Rancher
An update on an earlier post:
The good news is that he was not found guilty of violating the civil rights of the illegal aliens he caught on his property. This is a good precedence for future cases. In my opinion, if you are on his property illegally, your civil rights do not trump his right to defend his home. That said, I welcome anybody with open arms that is willing to attempt to become a legal citizen through the proper channels.
The bad news in this case is that 6 of the illegals were awarded $78,000 in punitive damages for assault and emotional distress.

Arizona Rancher Sued By Illegal Aliens for $32 Million
This is just another example of the lack of common sense with our justice system. I don't see how this wasn't thrown out immediately. I'll admit, I may be biased after my little brother lost his leg and incurred $2 million in medical bills because of an illegal alien. He was crossing the street and was run down by a drunk-driving illegal. In this case, a guy has been vandalized by illegal immigrants and detains them at gunpoint until the Border Patrol can show up. For his trouble, he is sued for $32 million.
From the Washington Times:
Roger Barnett, 64, began rounding up illegal immigrants in 1998 and turning them over to the U.S. Border Patrol, he said, after they destroyed his property, killed his calves and broke into his home.
----
The lawsuit is based on a March 7, 2004, incident in a dry wash on the 22,000-acre ranch, when he approached a group of illegal immigrants while carrying a gun and accompanied by a large dog.
Attorneys for the immigrants - five women and 11 men who were trying to cross illegally into the United States - have accused Mr. Barnett of holding the group captive at gunpoint, threatening to turn his dog loose on them and saying he would shoot anyone who tried to escape.

Just When You Thought You Had Seen It All
A company is selling a Caylee Anthony doll. That's right, the little girl that went missing and was later found murdered. What a sick world we live in.

Update(1/27/09 10:54 am CST):
Apparently, they have decided to pull the doll due to consumer uproar. Power to the people.

Screw You Chrysler
Chrysler apparently thought that taking taxpayers dollars and spending them for full page ads in newspapers like USA Today and The Wall Street Journal (prices range from $206,000 - $264,000 and $112,000 and $217,000 respectively) was a good idea. What was the purpose of the ad? To thank the taxpayers for the money. That's a huge slap in the face to all of us and just another reason I personally will never own a Chrysler vehicle again.
Here's the ad:

Yet Another Teacher Spreading Ignorance To Our Youth
Basically, a teacher confiscated linux CDs from a student while claiming that "No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful." I shudder at the thought of someone like this imparting their "knowledge" to our children, but this is standard operating procedure these days. If more schools used free, open-source programs, they would have money to pay for quality teachers and have more to spend on their students. If my children expressed an interest in using linux, I would be the first to encourage it.

Monster Cables - A Real Monster
There's nothing quite as satisfying as taking down a bully. Please join me in never ever ever making the mistake of purchasing anything from Monster Cables (the super expensive cables you have no doubt seen at Best Buy). Why? They seem to think it's okay to sue anybody with "Monster" in their name, even if it is a putt-putt course. This is apparently par for the course with them if you'll excuse the pun, as they've done this to other companies in the past. If you happen to live near Monster Minigolf, you can donate to their legal defense and get a coupon. Just another reason to hate lawyers and stupid corporations.

Balance The Budget Or We All Go Down
Is it any wonder that the dollar is hurting and we are all feeling the pressures of higher prices on groceries and other basic necessities. Our leaders are once again leading us down the path that will end up with a wider gap between the poor and the wealthy. I fear that the middle class will soon be a distant memory and my children will be paying for mistakes made by the current generation.
Our lack of forethought regarding the economy and energy independence is only just beginning to be felt. Unfortunately, I just don't see how bailing out companies is allowing a true free market system to thrive and penalize those who knowingly make poor decisions. CEOs that drive their companies into the ground collect fat paychecks, expect government handouts when things go south, and the rest of us see the deficit rise and the dollar grow weaker, which leads to inflation and higher prices. Washington keeps saving Wall Street, and the rest of us will end up suffering for it, mark my words. God help us if we have another Republican in office, as lowering taxes across the board will only increase the damage.
Some sobering statistics came up in an AP article today:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26623058/
WASHINGTON - The federal government will run a near-record deficit of $407 billion for the budget year ending Sept. 30, according to the latest Capitol Hill estimates.
The Congressional Budget Office figures released Tuesday say the flood of red ink will spill over into next year, when the deficit would reach a record $438 billion — and could go even higher as the government takes over mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
“Today’s estimates provide the latest evidence of the fiscal legacy of Republican policies: record deficits and a weak economy,” said House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt Jr., D-S.C. “It’s another reminder of the dismal economy and budget that Republicans are leaving others to sort out.”

Labor Day Rant
I just don't get it. Men get a bad rap for not being there for their kids after divorce or out of wedlock situations, but there have been times that I can see how many would find it much easier to do so than to deal with uncooperative mothers. I spent the last 2+ years fighting for my rights as a father and want nothing more than to see my son grow into a strong, confident, and happy adult, but I fear that he's been thrown to the wolves out of spite. I wish some people could just grow up and put the important things, namely our son, first. In the end, I gave in to avoid having a fight in front of him, but most likely, all I've done is given her a payoff for her bad behavior. I just hope someday, he'll see the truth in all the lies he's been told and make good decisions for himself.
